Accessibility Acknowledgement

Our building was constructed in the 1800s, and unfortunately was not designed with accessibility in mind. Neither theater is ADA compliant (which is the floor and not the ceiling when it comes to accessibility). We recognize that gaps in our accessibility impact our capacity to serve disabled artists and audiences members that deserve to be welcome and comfortable in our space.

We’ve provided details below on the specific issues that folks who use mobility devices may face in our venues, as well as solutions we have found (if we’ve found them). If you have questions, comments, or suggestions about our accessibility options and limitations, we encourage you to get in touch by email or phone.

Mobility and Wheelchair Accessibility

The Mainstage Theater is wheelchair accessible on the ground level, however our restrooms are not. The Mainstage Theater’s balcony and the Upstairs Theater are not wheelchair accessible. Both require navigating a staircase. Details are below:

Mainstage Theater (Ground Level)

The Mainstage ground level is wheelchair-accessible through the easternmost entrance, a few feet away from the main lobby door. The main lobby door has a single step with a 4 in. rise before the door. The accessible entrance has no step and the sidewalk ramps up to the door. Please reach out to the box office in advance so they can make sure the door is open, and to help you find your way to the Mainstage Theater once you’re inside the building.

To find the accessible entrance from the outside, look for the single door with the small metal sign that says “Theater” over it (not the double door with the red “Connelly Theater” sign over it). The accessible door is the entrance used by audiences for the Upstairs theater.

Seating configurations vary from show to show. Please speak to the box office in advance so they can reserve an accessible space for you and any companions.

Upstairs Theater & Mainstage Balcony

The Upstairs theater and Mainstage balcony are not wheelchair accessible. The entrances to these spaces are on the second floor of the building and is only accessible by stairs. The stairway contains 18 steps total. Each step is 4 ft. wide, 1 ft. deep, and has a 7 in. rise. To the right of the stairs is a stable railing for support. The railing is 34 in. above each step.

We understand the steps may be doable for some folks, and not for others. If you think the steps would be navigable for you with assistance and are comfortable with front of house staff assisting you, please reach out in advance so we may arrange this with the company’s front of house staff. If you have any questions about your specific needs in our space, please email us.

Restrooms

Our restrooms are not wheelchair accessible. If you use a mobility device that requires a wider stall, we have made arrangements with The Cabin NYC, a bar across the street (205 E. 4th St.), for our patrons to use their bathroom. There are no steps to navigate from the sidewalk to the bathroom at the Cabin. Note that The Cabin is not open on Mondays. If you’re using their restroom and want to stick around for something to eat or drink, they will also happily offer you 15% off your tab when you show your Connelly Theater ticket.

Please note: Each production is managed individually by the company that is producing the show, not by the theater itself, which means that front of house staff changes for each production. The venue’s management team, which of course does not change from show to show, are Josh and Mele. We are happy to help you, and to facilitate communication with each show’s staff. We highly recommend reaching out at least one business day in advance so that we can ensure that staff is familiar with your needs. Please email us or call us at (646) 343-1586 and select option 2 to speak to the management team. We do provide accessibility information to the staff of each production, but reaching out in advance will ensure that they are prepared for your specific needs.
